Face Fit Testing
It is important to undertake face fit testing on masks from time to time as one-off tests do not sufficiently protect workers. By law, the masks require a maintenance record.
Workers who wear tight-fitting respiratory protective equipment (RPE) require a certificate to prove that it fits and provides effective protection for the task. RPE cannot protect the wearer if it leaks.
One major cause of leaks is a poor fit: tight-fitting facepieces need to fit the wearer’s face to be effective.
As people come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, it is unlikely that one particular type or size of RPE facepiece will fit everyone. Face fit testing will ensure that the equipment selected is suitable for the wearer.
Experienced consultants at EP Risk Consultancy are qualified to guide you and your workers through the face fit testing procedure.
The qualitative test can only be carried out on half masks. The wearer must be clean shaven and the test takes around 20 minutes and involves wearing a hood over the head and shoulders.
The tester sprays either a bitter tasting substance (Bitrex) or a sweet substance (Saccharine) to challenge the face seal whilst the wearer undertakes seven exercises (in a hood to contain the test substance).
If after the seven exercises (seven minutes), the candidate has not detected (tasted) the test substance, that is regarded as a pass and a fit factor of 100 is assigned.
It is part of the protocol that at the end of the test, the candidate is required to break the seal to demonstrate how effective the seal has been.
